Hi Doc,
The test that I took was only of my right heel. The printout showed that I scored well above women my age, though slightly lower than the "reference" 35-year-old woman. Interestingly, the percentages were almost the same as I had in 2000 when, as a subject in a research project at CU Boulder, I had a full body (DECA, I think it's called) test. This would, in fact, indicate that I had lost a bit, as I'm now being compared with women 10 years older than that last test. I'm taking this to indicate that I could do more to improve my bone composition - being stronger than the average 72-year-old is "faint praise". So I'm back on a CA/MG liquid supplement - plus trying to increase my intake of yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. I don't like drinking milk - but just remembered - maybe I should add some chocolate milk. Now that I'm back to running - a little bit anyway - I need have less concern about calories. Owen is a big advocate of chocolate milk as a recovery drink. Yummmmm

That's great Diane. The heel test is a reasonable screening test and suggests that your bone strength is good. The formal bone density test is of the spine and femur but generally correlates well with the heel test. Don't forget the vitamin D. You will get a fair bit with the dairy intake, but a supplement, even in our sunny weather is generally a good idea.
Happy running.

Every morning I try to remember to take my calcium supplement along with a vitamin D pill, and to do this when I haven't been drinking coffee. Frightening medical photographs of bones with osteoperosis have worried me ever since I was 13. _________________ Water off a duck's back (^&%^&%##@*&*) !!!! |

I take the Vit D as a liquid concentrate. Comes in a little bottle with a dropper - one drop = 1000 IUs, it says.
Re dairy et al - was just reading something about CA in dark green leafy veggies - my favourites. Chard from the market for dinner tonight |
