Event Equipment: The club has timing equipment, course marking and measuring tools, finish chute, road signs, vests, and signs for course marshalls and volunteers.

Historical Information: The club has records of race results and articles dating back to its origins in the Valley. These records are constantly updated and are kept at Extreme Runners, located in Courtenay.

Run Organization: The club organizes the annual 5K Running Clinic; the Frontrunners Island Series Comox Valley RV 1/2 Marathon; the July 1st Courtenay 5th Street Mile (a measured downhill course where we hope to see a "four-minute" mile); the Comox Nautical Days Four- Mile Foot Race (the oldest continuous running event in British Columbia); the Memorial Run/ Walk; and the Jingle Bell Christmas Benefit run. Awards, draw prizes and hot food are the order of the day. All runners and walkers are welcome.

Club Coach: Kathy Rung, an experienced and highly accomplished coach and teacher, works with the CVRR members on a regular basis. These "Tuesday Track" sessions run all year long on Tuesdays at 5 pm at the Sports Centre Track.. These workouts are meant to be speed sessions.

We welcome runners of all abilities and ages but you should be able to run at least 3km at a steady pace.

Runners of all ages work to their own levels of fitness and strength. All members are welcome to attend these sessions to add variety to their running and improve their running ability. Non- members are welcome to attend a session before joining the CVRR. Come on out and meet everyone and have fun while you improve your fitness! See more details under the Tuesday Track tab.

How to Join: The CVRR has over 150 members covering the full range of running ability. Family memberships allow group involvement of all family members for a reduced fee. The annual dues to join the club are: $20.00 for a single and $30.00 for a family membership.

You are encouraged to join up on line by registering on line. See details under the Membership tab. Membership forms can also be obtained at Extreme Runners and mailed to the CVRR or dropped off at Extreme Runners on Fifth St in Courtenay.

CVRR History

The Comox Valley Road Runners (CVRR) was founded May 7, 1980. Dick Merrick was first club president. He was succeeded by Bent Harder, who served until 1989. Early leaders were Gary Holt, Sally Kunz, Alex Stuart, and John Crouch.

The club's first organized running event was the Cumberland Empire Days 3 Miler on May 18, 1981. In May of 1985, Leo Vogel of the CVRR organized a relay run to Victoria to hand over a donation cheque to Steve Fonyo. A team of ten runners moved a baton with over $6,000 from Courtenay to Victoria in just over 16 hours. This event stimulated John Crouch and others to establish the Island Relay as an annual event.

In 1992, club members Al Munday and John Ingram were instrumental in working with the local Rotary Club to establish the first 24 Hour Relay to benefit St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox. Over the next four years the event raised over $140,000. In 1998 the CVRR made a charitable donation of $2.00 per entrant from the Comox Valley 1/2 Marathon. The Jingle Bell Run contributes to the local food bank.

The annual 5km Running Clinic, organized and presented by the club, is a popular community event introducing running and walking as a fitness and social activity. The clinic instructs over 100 new runners/walkers for ten weeks, culminating in a 5K Fun Run/Walk.
