CVRR Members Past & Present: Gordon Harris

“My contributions to the CVRR club include being a run leader or assistant leader for the annual Run Clinic, which I believe I did for 5 or 6 years full or part time.  Also volunteering for the 5th street mile, nautical days and the CV Half Marathon in various duties.  For 2 years I typed up the minutes for my wife who was secretary and for 1 year I served as a director.  I have also volunteered for other races in the Valley such as the Steam Donkey, Momar, Perseverance and Devil’s Ladder.

Running accomplishments include doing 3 Marathons, including Boston Marathon in 2007 as well as 3 Penticton Ironman events in which 3 full Marathons were completed along with a 4 km swim and 180 km bike.  I’ve done 25+ half Marathons as well as 8 half Ironman events.  Of note, I was in the World Master’s 1/2 Ironman in Edmonton.  I’ve done many road and trail races, the most memorable doing the Emperor’s Challenge in Tumbler Ridge 5 times, along with being part of the relay at the Canadian Death Race in which I completed 4 stages over the years.

Other than run, I also like to hike, mountain bike and swim.  My hobbies include reading, gardening and woodwork on a lathe.

My career was with Environment Canada, as a Meteorological technician and later as a HydrometricTechnician over a total of 34 years.  I am retired now.

I’ve run consistently the past 23 years, but did play soccer for 10 years in my 30’s and hockey for 10 years in my 40’s. I started running at age 50.  I have been a member for around 15 years.

Most fondly for me are the memories of training on the trails with friends or alone, and most of all the social aspect of going to a relay race with friends or to an Island race event.

I like the feeling of running in the forest the most, perhaps the least aspect is if I get injured when trying too hard during a race.

I am still competitive in my age group and usually am in the top 50% of the overall field, except for very long or hilly races.

I am currently running 30 km a week, maybe over 3 to 4 runs.

Running means I can get exercise and improve my mood while reducing stress.

Also it means connecting with others who enjoy the sport.

I think I am basically a trail runner who enjoys group runs and the occasional race.

My goals for this year are to cut back on doing races, do more volunteering and hope to get in more hiking instead of racing.

Quirky?  When running alone in grizzly bear country I will sing out loud, the same few songs over and over, lol”
