CVRR Members Past & Present: Joyce Slaney

A guest post:

I have been a runner for over 40 years, with most of those miles logged on the road, having completed many half marathon races over that time.  About seven years ago when I moved to the island,  I discovered trail running—and it quickly became a passion. The challenge, connection to nature, and sense of exploration completely changed how I experience running.

While I still love the sport, my greatest joy no longer comes from running the fastest or the longest. Instead, I am most fulfilled when mentoring and encouraging new runners, helping them discover confidence, consistency, and a fun running experience.

My involvement with CVRR began when I participated in the Learn to Run clinic, an experience that shaped my commitment to welcoming and supporting runners of all levels. Since then, I have served the club in several roles, including Club Secretary, Treasurer, and Race Director for the 5th Street Mile. I have also volunteered for countless events and committees over the years, always eager to help where needed.

My current passion project is Taste of Trails, where new runners are introduced to trail running and basic wayfinding skills in the Cumberland Hills. Sharing these trails—and the joy they bring—feels like the perfect way to combine mentorship, community, and the adventure of running.
